Galapagos: Mendel's Escape Back to Software Page

Description:

In Galapagos, you don't control the main character, but instead you manipulate its environment so it doesn't get itself killed, from walking off a cliff or diving into some kind of liquid of extreme temperatures, for example. Sound familiar? Lemmings employed this form of gameplay to become an instant classic. Galapagos isn't even original for being three-dimensional-the lemmings have walked into that arena first as well. But, even with an extra dimension to roam, they still couldn't move out of harm's way without your constant attention. This is where Galapagos is different.

When we speak of artificial intelligence (AI) in computer games, we're not exactly referring to HAL 9000. AI in games consists of algorithms that tell the computer to act a certain way depending on the actions of the player. Some of the better games use a random element to make it less predictable. For example, if you fire a gun in the same room an "unsuspecting" enemy is in, he will turn to face you and shoot you until you die. The computer already knows you're there, but is waiting for a specific event to react to. A more complex AI would give the enemy a 60% chance to successfully dodge your fire, or something like that.

In Galapagos, the main character, a small metallic bug-like critter called Mendel, is the one who's artificially intelligent, not the enemies. And unlike the lemmings, once he falls off a cliff a few times, he knows to stay clear of them afterwards. They didn't pre-program him to avoid cliffs after a given number of times, either-he actually learned that on his own. Mendel's brain is actually a NERM (Non-Stationary Entropic Reduction Mapping) controller, Anark's own proprietary artificial life technology that would be best explained by someone who can fully understand logistic maps. What I can tell you, however, is that NERM is self-organizing and it's unique in that it can come up with more than one solution from the same input. This means that Mendel can, and will behave differently under the same circumstances each time. Previous experience will also influence what he does. When Mendel regenerates after a fatal mishap, his memory remains intact, so he'll have a better chance the next time around.

Okay, so it's a new kind of game that uses real AI that adapts to various conditions. But, what about the actual game? For such a complex main character, the game itself is very simple. That is not to say it is dull or easy. You view the world of Galapagos from a third-person perspective, following Mendel wherever he goes. The camera angle changes, depending on where Mendel is and where he's going. You have to help Mendel get from one place to another, overcome obstacles, and avoid hazards by pointing and clicking on various objects to either activate them, or something else in another part of the level. That's the easy part. What isn't always easy is figuring out what something does when it isn't obvious, and what you have to do in order to get Mendel to reach a certain place safely. This can be daunting, and ultimately frustrating, but with the patch update, you can save anywhere in the game instead of just the checkpoints that are few and far between. Without it, I'd have given the game a lower rating, but with it the game is fun, challenging, and can even be addictive. Hopefully, Galapagos and its advanced AI technology will inspire a whole new breed of game, and an intelligent one at that.

Storyline:
Galapagos is the name of an eerie, technological, abstract dimension created by a very powerful entity. Galapagos uses dimensional gates to suck the resources from nearby worlds to build more and more pre-programmed machines of destruction, annihilating or enslaving their inhabitants. Mendel is a synthetic organism containing stolen technology, used as a prototype for a new generation of autonomous killing machines. You're supposed to save him from torturous experiments by assisting him out of the lab and out of Galapagos, jumping in and out of five worlds in total. Your motivation is supposedly from the threat of Galapagos overthrowing your own world.
